Qn:
1) my observation of the youths now is that many are attracted to majlis selawat and the likes of it. The halls are full of youth! Yet for majlis ilm, especially by our local scholars, you see empty seats... What is your opinion on this 'phenomenon'?
2) in another observation, i see that mosque youths are committed, but committed to too many things at once such that they lack the focus in any one commitment that they say they're committed to. What is your advice for these youths?
Ans: When I was in US I was asked the same qn. My answer is: We need to balance between Zikr (spirituality) & Fikr (intellectuality). Everyone effort is doing good works, all khayr, they are trying to get closer to Allah s.w.t., and they will focus what they are most comfortable with. Our task is to ensure that WE are balanced between Zikr & Fikr.

I'm not one of those who participate in Majlis Selawat etc., but I wouldn't say it as Bid'ah, because the word is too heavy to be used here. What I'm worried about is, it has become a form of entertainment, rather than getting closer to Allah s.w.t. Having said that, in some parts in Malaysia, even religious lectures & talks (intellectual discourse) have become entertainment, where they start with a verse & hadith for 5 min, and the rest of it is filled with jokes.
